Nermina Delic
Leaving my role as a trustee of the Monte San Martino Trust feels, in many ways, less like a conclusion and more like a continuation of a journey that began long before I joined the board in 2020.
There is a sense of a full circle closing. My first encounter with the Trust was as a bursary recipient in 2007, coming from le Marche, and that experience was life-changing in more ways than I could have understood at the time. I don’t think I will ever fully “leave” the Trust.
A couple of memories I will always treasure are the event we planned in Servigliano for the 80th anniversary of the Armistice in 2023, and my involvement in the research project with the Parri Institute with my fellow trustee John Simkins and volunteer Rossella Ruggeri.
Seeing so many people gather in Servigliano to remember, connect, and build friendships was deeply memorable. It was a privilege to help shape and see the work that the researchers at Parri developed from an idea into something tangible and living (alleatiinitalia.it). It has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my involvement.
I have deeply valued the opportunity to work alongside my fellow trustees. I have learned a great deal from each of them. In particular, I want to acknowledge Nick Young, first as Chair of the Trust during my early time on the board, and, later, Phil Cooke. Working with both of them has been an education in itself: thoughtful, generous, and always grounded in a genuine commitment to the Trust’s purpose and care for its students and fellow trustees. I am very grateful for the guidance, conversations and shared work over the years.
More than anything, this experience has been about connection: to the students, to the history of the Trust, and to the people who give their time and energy to sustain it. It has been an honour to serve, and I leave the role with deep appreciation for everything I have learned and experienced. I would also like to thank all the supporters I have met over the years; your commitment makes this work possible!
Although I am stepping down as trustee, my relationship with the Trust remains very much ongoing. I will continue to follow its work closely and take pride in what it achieves.
