On 25th April 2025, members of the Italian community and its supporters gathered in London for La Festa della Liberazione, a day that holds deep historical and emotional significance in Italy. It marks the country’s liberation from fascism in 1945 and pays tribute to those who resisted oppression, including Allied prisoners of war who escaped from captivity and were sheltered by courageous civilians.
The event was organised by a coalition of Italian and British organisations including the London branch of Associazione Nazionale Partigiani d’Italia (ANPI). Other groups involved were: Manifesto di Londra; INCA Regno Unito; Moving Forward – Italians in UK, progressive civil society alliance; PD Londra -– Decio Anzani; CinemaItaliaUK; Patronato Ital Uil Londra; Inas –Cisl UK; Patronato ACLI Regno Unito; Il Circolo; Italia Viva; Azione UK; and the Monte San Martino Trust.
I had the privilege of attending the event alongside David Ross, Chris Robillard and Mark Dobson, the sons of three former Allied PoWs. They shared moving stories of their fathers’ escapes from prison camps and of the extraordinary support given by the Italian population. Their presence served as a powerful reminder of the enduring bond between Britain and Italy, forged in the most difficult of times.
Alessandro Mignini, the Italian Consul, delivered a thoughtful and heartfelt address, highlighting the importance of remembering this shared history. Simone Rossi, of ANPI London, followed with a compelling reflection on the continued relevance of anti-fascism and international solidarity. The speakers helped to introduce these stories to a new generation.
MSMT remains committed to keeping alive the stories of escapes by PoWs in Italy and the acts of bravery shown by their helpers. Events such as this remind us that memory is not just about the past, it is about preserving our values.
