Sulmona trail 2025

The Sulmona freedom trail (Sentiero della Libertà) in 2025 takes place on April 25, 26 and 27, continuing a fine annual tradition that began in 2001.

Registration, with a participation fee of 75 euros, is open until March 25th through the official website www.ilsentierodellaliberta.it.

The Sentiero became a symbol of hope and courage during World War II. It was the escape path followed by hundreds of prisoners of war, mainly British and American soldiers, who had been held in Campo 78, a PoW camp in Fonte d’Amore, near Sulmona. After their daring escape, these prisoners crossed the Guado di Coccia to reach the Allied forces, stationed beyond the Maiella mountain range, seeking freedom and safety.

This escape was made possible through the selfless support of the local population of Sulmona, who risked their lives to help the prisoners. Despite Sulmona being under fascist control, the townspeople demonstrated extraordinary acts of solidarity, providing food, shelter, and guidance, all while defying the authorities.

The march retraces the original path of the prisoners, covering approximately 50km. Starting in Sulmona, the route passes through Campo di Giove and Taranta Peligna, concluding in Casoli. Participants can choose to sleep in a sleeping bag at the facilities provided by the association or opt for accommodations with beds, for an additional fee.

The event attracts hundreds of participants, particularly students, who walk in remembrance of those who fought for freedom. Over the years they have been joined by members of the Monte San Martino Trust and its sister organisation, the WW2 Escape Lines Association, including in 2001 when the trail was inaugurated in the presence of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, President of Italy. During the war Ciampi had himself taken refuge from the Fascist regime in Abruzzo, where Sulmona is located.

The annual event not only commemorates the bravery of the prisoners and the people of Sulmona but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of solidarity and the fight for freedom.
