Our vision

Since the Trust’s foundation in 1989 we have granted more than 700 English language study bursaries to young Italians in recognition of the courage and sacrifice of their countrymen and women in sheltering prisoners of war on the run from 1943-1945. The awards were initiated by Keith Killby, a former PoW, who founded the Trust in 1989 and who was a staunch believer in cross-border co-operation in Europe. Students come from all over Italy but predominantly from the regions of Le Marche, Emilia Romagna and Abruzzo, where the largest PoW camps were concentrated. Descendants of families who rescued escapers are given preference but this is not a condition of the bursary.

Application process

We accept bursary applications from September for the following year. You can apply directly in September, or contact us before on info@msmtrust.org.uk telling us you are interested in applying . We can then send you the application form in September.

Our coordinators will contact you to discuss your application, your interests and answer any questions you have.

Applications must arrive by 31st January for the current year and candidates must be 18 at the time of their arrival in the UK. If you have any questions about the bursary process, contact info@msmtrust.org.uk.

What you need to do

Upon confirmation of a bursary you need to book your flight and transfers. The Trust’s student coordinator can advise you on how to do this. Before you leave Italy you will be provided with information on how to travel from your incoming airport to your host family.

While you’re here…
